Children use smartphones, social media, online games, messaging applications and video platforms for education, entertainment, friendships and communication. But the same digital environment can also expose children to cyberbullying, fake social media profiles, online grooming, harassment, blackmail, privacy violations, inappropriate content and psychological pressure. For parents, one of the biggest challenges is that many online problems do not remain limited to a child’s phone. A message can be forwarded, a photograph can be copied, a screen can be recorded and a private conversation can become public within minutes. This does not mean children should be afraid of technology. Instead, they need the knowledge, confidence and support required to use technology safely. Why Online Safety for Children Has Become So Important Children often understand how to use an application faster than they understand its risks. They may know how to create an account, post a story, join a group or share a photograph, but they may not understand privacy settings, digital footprints, impersonation, manipulation or the consequences of forwarding sensitive content. Parents sometimes focus primarily on screen time. Screen time is important, but what a child is doing during that screen time can be even more important. A child may spend an hour watching educational content, talking to friends or playing a game. Another child may spend the same amount of time experiencing cyberbullying, interacting with a fake profile or comparing themselves constantly with unrealistic social-media content. Therefore, online safety should involve both how long children are online and what they experience while they are online. The Screenshot Problem: Why Digital Privacy Matters A private conversation can feel temporary. A photograph sent to one person may feel private. But digital information can be copied, forwarded, downloaded or captured through screenshots. Consider an illustrative situation. Two teenagers are in a relationship and exchange private messages or personal photographs. They trust each other and believe their conversation will remain private. Later, the relationship ends. One person shares a screenshot with a friend. That friend shares it with another person, and eventually it reaches a larger school group. The original conversation may have been private, but the digital copy can continue circulating. The lesson for children is not simply “never trust anyone.” The more useful lesson is: Do not share anything digitally that could seriously harm you if it became public. Children should also understand that forwarding someone else’s private photograph or conversation without permission can cause serious harm and may have legal consequences, particularly when minors are involved. The Government of India’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal specifically provides reporting mechanisms for cybercrime involving women and children and for unlawful child sexual abuse material. Fake Profiles: Not Everyone Online Is Who They Claim to Be One of the common misconceptions among children is: “I only talk to people my age.” But a social media profile does not automatically prove someone’s identity. A profile may use a child’s photograph, a fake name, copied posts and carefully selected information to appear genuine. Someone may spend weeks or months building trust before asking for personal information, photographs, video calls, money or secrecy. This type of manipulation can be associated with online grooming. Parents should explain to children that: A profile picture does not prove someone’s identity. A mutual friend does not necessarily mean a person is trustworthy. Online friendships should not automatically become offline meetings. Children should never feel pressured to keep an online relationship secret from parents or trusted adults. Requests for private photographs, passwords, OTPs, location information or personal documents should be treated as warning signs. Suspicious accounts should be blocked and reported. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre’s cyber-safety guidance specifically advises parents to discuss grooming, bullying and stalking with children and to pay attention to changes in behaviour or secrecy around online activity. Cyberbullying Does Not End When School Ends Traditional bullying was often limited by physical location and time. Online bullying can follow a child home. A humiliating photograph, fake meme, edited video, insulting message or anonymous account can continue reaching a child through their phone after school. For example, an illustrative school scenario might involve a student becoming the subject of a humiliating meme. The student leaves a group chat hoping the problem will stop, but the same content appears on another platform or through direct messages. Telling the child simply to “ignore it” may not solve the problem. Parents should first listen, understand what happened and help the child document and report the abuse. Warning signs of cyberbullying may include: Suddenly avoiding school or friends Becoming unusually quiet or anxious Losing interest in activities Frequently checking the phone Suddenly deleting social media accounts Becoming defensive about online activity Changes in sleeping or eating patterns Fear of opening messages or notifications Unexplained emotional reactions after using the phone A child experiencing cyberbullying needs support, not blame. Social Media Comparison and a Child’s Self-Image Cyber safety is not limited to hacking and technical threats. A child’s digital environment can also affect how they see themselves. Social media often presents carefully selected moments: attractive photographs, vacations, achievements, expensive lifestyles, edited images and seemingly perfect relationships. A young person may repeatedly compare their ordinary life with someone else’s carefully edited online identity. Over time, this can contribute to feelings of inadequacy, insecurity or isolation. Parents should therefore ask more than: “How many hours were you on your phone?” They should also ask: “What were you seeing?” “Who were you talking to?” “Did anything online make you uncomfortable?” “Did anyone ask you to keep something secret?” These questions create an environment where children can discuss online experiences without immediately fearing punishment.
